Sapphire vs Fused Silica Thermal Shock FAQ

Q1: Which material has better thermal shock resistance: sapphire or fused silica?

A: It depends on the failure mechanism. Fused silica has far lower CTE (0.55×10⁻⁶/K vs 5~7×10⁻⁶/K for sapphire), so it withstands rapid overall temperature cycling better under uniform heating. Sapphire has much higher thermal conductivity, which dissipates localized hot spots; it works better under concentrated thermal radiation and uneven heat distribution.

  • Uniform temperature cycling (slow overall heating): Fused silica wins
  • Local hot spots + steep face-to-face temperature gradient: Sapphire is more reliable

Q2: Why do sapphire windows crack easily under fast thermal cycling even though they withstand high temperatures?

A: Sapphire’s higher thermal expansion coefficient creates large tensile stress between the hot center and cold clamped edge during rapid heating. Edge microcracks from poor grinding become crack initiation points. The main solution is to adopt floating spring mounting, slow down temperature ramp speed ≤2°C/min, and fully chamfer all edges to eliminate stress concentration.

Q3: What are the temperature limits for continuous service?

  • Fused silica (synthetic grade): Continuous working temperature up to 1100°C; softens above 1200°C.
  • Optical-grade sapphire: Stable up to 1600°C; mechanical performance remains intact at 1500°C long-term.
  • Note: Sealing gaskets often limit the assembly temperature rather than the glass substrate itself.

Q4: UV transmission difference between the two materials?

A: Fused silica offers excellent deep UV transmission down to 190 nm; no birefringence, ideal for UV optical instruments. Sapphire has strong UV absorption below 250 nm and exhibits crystal birefringence, which will split polarized light beams.

Q5: Quick selection summary for furnace viewports

  1. Low-to-medium temperature, stable temperature cycle, UV observation: Choose synthetic fused silica.
  2. Ultra-high temperature, uneven radiant heat, high pressure, particle erosion: Choose optical-grade sapphire with floating mounting structure.

Custom Optics RFQ Required Information Checklist

Overview

Incomplete RFQ information leads to inaccurate quotations, delayed production and non-conforming finished parts. This checklist covers all mandatory items to ensure fast, accurate pricing from Felix Glass engineering team.

1. Basic Project Information (Must-Have)

  • Part name & application scenario (furnace viewport / laser lens / IR dome / protective window)
  • Project stage: prototype / small batch trial / mass production
  • Order quantity: sample quantity + annual production volume
  • Required lead time & delivery address

2. Material & Optical Wavelength Requirements

  • Substrate material + grade: e.g. Synthetic Fused Silica / C-plane Optical Sapphire / CVD ZnSe / Germanium
  • Transmission spectral band: UV / Visible / MWIR / LWIR; exact wavelength range
  • Allowable material alternatives (if any)

3. Dimensional & Mechanical Specifications (With 2D Drawings)

  • Overall diameter/thickness, clear optical aperture (mark non-optical clamping zone)
  • Key tolerances: thickness TTV, parallelism, wedge, edge chamfer size
  • Edge treatment: fine ground / polished / 45° chamfer; no sharp edges
  • Mounting structure: fixed clamp / floating spring mount

4. Surface Quality & Optical Tolerances

  • Scratch-Dig standard: e.g. 40-20, 60-40 (MIL-O-13830)
  • Surface flatness (PV value) and surface roughness Ra
  • Wavefront distortion requirements (if applicable)

5. Coating Technical Parameters

  • Coating type: AR anti-reflection / HR high-reflection / DLC hard coating
  • Working wavelength, incidence angle (AOI), single-side or double-side coating
  • Coating durability requirement: humidity resistance, thermal cycling test standard
  • Masking requirements (uncoated edge zone)

6. Operating Environmental Conditions

  • Continuous working temperature & thermal cycling range
  • Thermal shock requirement, pressure load, dust & flue gas fouling
  • Chemical environment: acid, alkali, plasma or oil mist exposure

7. Inspection & Documentation Requirements

  • Required test reports: dimensional report, surface scratch-dig inspection, flatness interferogram, spectral transmission curve
  • First article inspection (FAI) requirement
  • Packaging: cleanroom packaging, anti-shock foam, desiccant for moisture-sensitive IR materials (ZnSe, ZnS)

8. Common RFQ Mistakes To Avoid

  1. Only providing dimension without clear aperture: optical polishing area cannot be defined.
  2. Setting overly tight tolerances without actual system demand: drastically increases cost and lead time.
  3. Missing coating incidence angle: AR coating performance will drop sharply when AOI mismatches design.
  4. Not specifying environmental conditions: material grade selection will be incorrect, leading to early cracking.
