Summary
Design guides for flat optical windows, including substrate selection, parallelism, scratch-dig grades, AR and DLC coatings for laser, vacuum and infrared systems.
Flat optical window design guides covering substrate material selection, parallelism, scratch-dig grades, AR / DLC coatings for laser chambers, vacuum viewports and infrared sensor protection. Optical windows are flat, non-focusing transparent plates used to isolate optical paths, protect detectors and seal vacuum / pressure chambers. The core selection rule is matching substrate transmission band, mechanical strength, thermal stability and cost to your working wavelength and operating environment. Felix Glass supplies windows in BK7/K9, fused silica, sapphire, ZnS, ZnSe and silicon. Many engineers mistakenly use BK7 or fused silica for long-wave infrared thermal systems. These materials are opaque at 8–14 μm and cannot transmit thermal IR signals. Even with the correct substrate, poor optical window specifications or mismatched coating will introduce ghost reflections, wavefront distortion, signal loss and stray light. This guide covers core mechanical-optical specs and coating options for custom optical windows. When requesting optical windows, clearly separate substrate specs from coating specs. Specify clear aperture (not just outer diameter), thickness tolerance, whether wedge / parallel is required, and any environmental testing requirements (thermal cycling, humidity, salt spray).
