Sapphire Optical Glass

Overview

Sapphire optical glass (single-crystal alumina, Al₂O₃) is one of the most widely used high-performance optical substrate materials. It features a broad transmission band ranging from ultraviolet (UV), visible light to mid-wave infrared. Compared with other optical materials, sapphire delivers outstanding scratch resistance, high thermal conductivity, excellent thermal shock resistance and strong resistance to corrosion, moisture and plasma erosion.

Its main limitation is relatively high refractive index and higher machining cost. Sapphire is the preferred choice when optical components need to survive extreme pressure, high temperature, abrasion and aggressive chemical environments.

  • Sapphire spherical & plano-convex lenses
  • Sapphire prisms, sapphire capillary tubes
  • Custom sapphire blanks and shaped substrates

Coating Options

We can deposit functional coatings on sapphire parts according to customer requirements:

  • AR Anti-Reflection coating (single-band, broadband UV-VIS-IR)
  • DLC Diamond-Like Carbon protective coating
  • Hard anti-abrasion coating, metal reflective coating

Typical Applications

  • Deep-sea optical detection & underwater camera windows
  • Aerospace, airborne and satellite optical systems
  • High-temperature furnace observation viewports
  • Plasma chamber, semiconductor processing optics
  • High-speed machine vision and protective optics

Machining Capability

Felix Glass supports custom sapphire machining from blank to finished optics. We achieve surface quality up to 20/10 scratch/dig, surface flatness λ/10 @632.8nm. Available shapes include round, square, rectangular and special custom profiles. We hold tight thickness tolerance, parallelism and angular tolerance for precision optical assemblies.
