1. About This FAQ

Find answers to common questions about custom ITO conductive glass, from coating selection to prototype approval. Each answer distinguishes general principles from the project-specific values that must be agreed before manufacture.

ITO glass can be supplied in different substrates, coating stacks, patterns and contact configurations. Numerical performance, supply scope and acceptance criteria should be confirmed for the actual component.

3. ITO Glass Basics

What is ITO conductive glass?

It is glass carrying a thin indium tin oxide coating. The substrate provides mechanical support and optical properties, while the film provides a conductive surface that transmits light over a specified wavelength range.

Does electricity flow through the glass thickness?

In the usual configuration, the intended current flows laterally through the conductive film between contacts. The supporting glass is not the intended current path. Define the coated face and contact locations on the drawing.

Is ITO glass the same as ordinary clear glass?

No. It has an electrically functional coating. A visually similar uncoated glass piece cannot replace it without losing that function. Conversely, the presence of ITO does not establish optical quality, heater temperature or device suitability.

4. Substrates and Shapes

Which substrate should I specify?

Choose a grade compatible with the optical band, mechanical geometry, temperature exposure and assembly process. Suitable soda-lime, borosilicate, optical glass or fused silica may be reviewed. Specify the exact grade if substitution would affect performance.

Can ITO glass be circular, shaped or curved?

These configurations can be reviewed against a drawing. Curved surfaces require attention to coating distribution, optical angles and current paths. A flat witness coupon alone does not establish every property of a finished dome.

Can the glass be strengthened or machined after coating?

Do not assume the process sequence is interchangeable. Machining, strengthening and thermal processing may affect the film or finished geometry. Include all intended steps in the review and agree on the manufacturing sequence.

5. Sheet Resistance

What does ohms per square mean?

Sheet resistance, expressed in Ω/□, describes lateral conduction in a thin film. For an ideal uniform rectangle with full-width opposing contacts, resistance is R = RₛL/W. The length-to-width ratio determines the number of squares.

Does 5 Ω/□ mean the finished heater is 5 Ω?

Only under the ideal one-square geometry with the stated contact assumptions and negligible additional resistance. Other shapes, electrode spacing and contacts can produce different terminal resistance.

What tolerance should I request?

Use a tolerance justified by the function and reviewed for feasibility. Define the measurement temperature, locations and whether limits apply at every point or to an average. Specify a uniformity formula if uniformity is an acceptance criterion.

6. Transmission and Optical Quality

What transmission percentage does ITO glass have?

There is no single percentage for all ITO glass. Transmission depends on wavelength, substrate, film and other layers. Request data for the finished configuration and specify minimum or average transmission over the actual operating band.

Does visible clarity establish infrared transmission?

No. A clear appearance does not establish performance at 850, 940, 1550 nm or another sensor wavelength. Specify every required band, the incidence angle and any relevant polarization condition.

Is transmission enough for an imaging window?

Not always. Reflection, scatter, distortion and transmitted wavefront may also matter. State the optical function and appropriate acceptance criteria rather than relying solely on a total-transmission value.

7. Transparent Heating

How does an ITO heater work?

Current flowing through the resistive film generates heat. At a stated DC operating resistance, P = V²/R. Temperature depends additionally on mounting, airflow, ambient conditions, heat transfer and control.

Can I use a 12 V or 24 V supply?

The supply voltage is a design input, not a heater rating by itself. Provide the voltage range, current limit, electrode geometry and temperature target so resistance and power can be reviewed together.

Will an anti-fog heater also remove ice?

Not automatically. Preventing condensation, clearing existing moisture and removing ice are different load cases. De-icing needs a defined ice condition, environment and clearance-time requirement, followed by representative testing.

8. Temperature Control and Contacts

Does ITO glass regulate its own temperature?

Do not assume self-regulating behavior. Define sensing and control suitable for the application, including sensor placement and maximum permitted temperatures. Validate the complete assembly under the intended conditions.

Are busbars, wires and controllers included?

Only when listed in the agreed supply scope. Identify bare coated glass, pads or busbars, attached leads, sensors and control hardware separately in the RFQ and quotation.

Can I solder directly onto the ITO surface?

Do not assume a soldering process is compatible with bare ITO or the supplied contact stack. Agree on the contact materials, attachment method, process temperature, strain relief and electrical acceptance criteria.

9. Patterned Electrodes

What is patterned ITO glass?

It has defined conductive regions such as tracks, pads and electrode arrays separated by nonconductive gaps. Patterning turns the film into the electrical layout required by the device or experiment.

What files are needed for a pattern?

Provide dimensioned artwork and a controlled drawing showing the coated face, viewing direction, datums, widths, gaps and alignment requirements. Identify file units and the controlling document to avoid scaling or mirroring errors.

How is a pattern accepted?

Check geometry plus electrical continuity through intended paths and isolation between separate regions. Define test points, conditions and limits. A visible gap is not sufficient proof of electrical isolation.

10. Coating Combinations and Alternatives

Can ITO be combined with AR coatings?

A compatible stack can be reviewed. Specify the optical band, angles and required contacts. Layers above the ITO may block direct electrical access, so exposed pads or masking may be needed.

Is lower sheet resistance always better?

No. It changes current and power for a given geometry and supply and must be balanced with optical and integration requirements. Select resistance to meet the function rather than as an isolated quality ranking.

Can FTO replace ITO?

Possibly, after qualification. Compare actual spectra, resistance, surface morphology, contacts and processing compatibility. The chemistry alone does not establish a drop-in replacement or a universal temperature limit.

11. Laboratory and Medical-Equipment Use

Can I use ITO slides in a liquid-contact experiment?

Evaluate the actual electrolyte, electrical potential, temperature, duration and cleaning process. Protect contacts as required and confirm stability in the intended experiment. No blanket compatibility with all solutions is implied.

Does medical-grade ITO glass mean it is sterile or approved for my device?

No. Define the component function, exposure, cleaning and required documentation. The phrase alone does not establish sterility, biocompatibility or approval of a finished device.

Can I reuse laboratory ITO electrodes?

Only if the cleaning and reuse process preserves the required electrical, optical and surface properties. Define checks after use and a rejection rule. Do not assume visually clean glass has returned to its original condition.

12. Cleaning, Handling and Storage

Can every ITO part be cleaned with IPA?

No universal approval applies. Check compatibility with all exposed coatings, contacts, adhesives and printed features. Use a cleaning method approved for the supplied configuration and intended next process.

Is ultrasonic cleaning suitable?

It may be part of a qualified bare-substrate process, but it is not automatically suitable for fine patterns, attached leads or bonded assemblies. Validate the fluid, equipment, fixture and process conditions.

How should parts be handled and stored?

Use clean edge handling and approved supports. Avoid touching or scraping functional areas and do not lift parts by their leads. Use compatible packaging that separates parts, prevents movement and protects contacts; retain coated-face identification.

13. Inspection and Qualification

What inspection reports should I request?

Request the evidence needed for critical requirements, such as dimensions, resistance maps, terminal or isolation results, spectral transmission and heater tests. Agree on methods, sampling and report format before production.

Can a witness coupon replace finished-part inspection?

Only for properties and correlations explicitly covered by the inspection plan. A coupon does not automatically establish pattern quality, contact integrity, curved geometry or mounted heating behavior.

How should I approve prototypes?

Test representative parts in the intended assembly and process. Record drawing revision, fixture, operating conditions and acceptance results. Resolve deviations and update the controlled specification before releasing repeat production.

14. Quotation, Samples and Production

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send the drawing, substrate, coated face, active area, electrical targets, optical bands, contact layout, operating conditions and required reports. Include prototype and production quantities, destination and required timing.

Are samples free, and what is the minimum order?

Samples are paid. Prototype costs, tooling and minimum order quantities depend on the approved design and processing scope and are confirmed in the quotation. Do not assume one quantity rule applies to every ITO configuration.

How are lead time and repeat-order consistency confirmed?

Lead time is confirmed for the scope, quantity and production schedule. For repeat orders, retain the approved drawing revision, substrate and coating requirements, inspection plan and change-approval process.

15. Ask About Your Custom ITO Glass Project

Send your drawing and application requirements for a project-specific review. Identify any unanswered optical, electrical or assembly question so the quotation can define the supply scope and acceptance basis clearly.
