Description

Fused Silica Subsea Dome Port with Mounting Flange

Custom optical dome ports for underwater cameras, ROVs and marine observation systems.

Felix Glass supplies custom fused silica underwater dome ports with an integrated mounting flange. The curved optical surface and stepped flange can be manufactured to your drawing, with dimensions, optical finish and coating requirements tailored to your camera housing and imaging system.

From prototype evaluation to repeat production, define the dome geometry and mounting interface together to achieve the optical performance and mechanical fit your project requires.

Optical Clarity for Underwater Imaging

A dome port provides a curved optical interface between the surrounding water and the camera housing. Its performance depends on dome curvature, wall thickness, surface quality and the position of the camera lens relative to the dome. Lens alignment and entrance-pupil position should be considered during system design, particularly for wide-angle imaging.

  • Fused silica substrate: Material grade can be selected to suit the intended UV, visible or near-infrared operating band.
  • Precision optical surfaces: Specify surface quality, surface figure and clear aperture according to the imaging requirement.
  • Integrated flange: Custom flange dimensions support alignment and mounting within the customer's housing design.
  • Optional optical coatings: AR or BBAR coatings can be specified for the required wavelength band and operating conditions.
  • Custom geometry: Define the outer diameter, inner diameter, dome height, radii and wall thickness in an approved drawing.

Designed Around Your Housing and Operating Depth

For subsea use, the dome, flange, supporting seat, retaining mechanism and seals must be considered as a complete assembly. A flange helps define the mounting interface, but does not independently establish a pressure rating.

Pressure qualification: Please provide your maximum operating depth, pressure-cycle requirements and housing drawing. Suitability for repeated deep-water operation must be confirmed through engineering assessment and an agreed pressure-test programme for the assembled design.

AR and BBAR Coating Options

Optional anti-reflection coatings can be tailored to the camera's operating wavelength band. Identify the outer water-facing surface and inner air-facing surface when specifying coatings, as their optical interfaces differ. For an exposed outer coating, include immersion duration, cleaning method and durability requirements in the RFQ.

Fused silica is an option for UV and visible optical systems, but material transmission alone does not determine underwater imaging range. Water conditions, illumination, working distance and detector response also influence system performance.

Custom Manufacturing and Inspection Requirements

Send your PDF drawing and STEP model for a manufacturing review. Specify critical optical zones separately from mounting and non-optical surfaces so that inspection requirements match the function of each area.

  • Dimensional inspection of the dome profile, flange and mounting interface.
  • Visual surface inspection against the agreed scratch-dig and edge-quality criteria.
  • Material documentation and optical inspection reports as specified in the quotation.
  • Coating spectral measurements and pressure testing when included in the agreed scope.
  • Protective packaging requirements for clean handling and shipment.

Typical Applications

  • Custom underwater camera enclosures and wide-angle imaging housings.
  • ROV and AUV optical observation systems.
  • Marine research cameras and underwater monitoring instruments.
  • Subsea UV or visible optical sensors, subject to system-level validation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this dome be used at 1,000 m or greater depth?

A depth rating cannot be assigned from the material name or outer diameter alone. Provide the complete dome and housing geometry, operating conditions and required service cycles for assessment. Any depth claim must be supported by qualification of the relevant assembly.

Is the 89 mm size a standard stock item?

The 89 mm dimension is a reference configuration. Please confirm the dimension definition, complete drawing and quantity with Felix Glass. Stock availability and lead time are confirmed in the quotation.

Can you manufacture a different dome size or flange?

Custom dimensions can be reviewed against your drawing, including dome curvature, wall thickness, flange diameter and seating geometry. Final manufacturability is confirmed after drawing review.

Are mounts and O-rings included?

The product described is the optical dome component. Mounts, O-rings, retainers and assembly services are separate requirements and are included only if listed in the quotation.

What information is needed for an accurate quotation?

Please send the drawing, material grade, quantity, optical requirements, operating depth, seal and mounting details, coating specification, delivery destination and requested schedule.
